Siddhivinayak Temple
Mumbai's spiritual anchor β Bollywood stars, cricket legends, and millions worship here before any major endeavor.
The Katha
In Hindu tradition, no prayer, no venture, no new beginning is ever started without first praying to Lord Ganesha β the Remover of Obstacles. In the heart of Mumbai, the city of dreams and relentless ambition, stands the temple that embodies this belief more powerfully than any other.
The original temple was built in 1801 by a woman named Deubai Patil. She was barren and had spent her entire life praying for a child. In her old age, she built this temple with a simple prayer: that no woman should ever suffer the pain of childlessness as she did. She installed a unique idol β Ganesha with his trunk curving to the right (normally it curves left). A right-trunk Ganesha is considered extremely rare and supremely powerful β so powerful that incorrect worship can actually bring misfortune. Hence, the temple follows extremely strict Vedic rituals.
Over the next two centuries, word spread that prayers at Siddhivinayak were granted with uncanny regularity. Today, it is the most visited temple in Mumbai. Bollywood superstars come here before every film release. Cricket legends pray here before world tournaments. Business tycoons visit before major deals. Politicians make a mandatory stop during campaigns. The temple's trust manages assets worth over 125 crore rupees.
The transformation is remarkable β from a tiny shrine built by a barren woman's grief into a six-story marble-and-gold complex that receives over 25,000 devotees on regular days and over 100,000 on Tuesdays (Ganesha's sacred day). The golden dome, funded by donations from Bollywood and Mumbai's business elite, gleams across the skyline.
