Grishneshwar Temple
The twelfth and final Jyotirlinga, located near the magnificent Ellora Caves.
The Katha
A deeply devoted woman named Kusuma made a practice of immersing one Shiva Lingam in a nearby lake every day after worship and making a new one the next morning. Her jealous sister-in-law, Ghusma, was consumed by envy at the devotion and the blessings Kusuma received. In a horrifying act, Ghusma murdered Kusuma's son and threw his body into the same lake.
The next morning, when Kusuma came to the lake to immerse her daily lingam, her son emerged from the water β alive, smiling, and unharmed. Lord Shiva had been moved by the depth of her devotion and had brought the boy back from death itself.
Kusuma then prayed to Shiva: "Lord, you have shown your power over death. But my sister-in-law's soul is corrupted by jealousy. Please do not punish her β for punishment only breeds more suffering. Instead, release her soul from its darkness." Shiva was so deeply moved by this extraordinary act of forgiveness β forgiving the woman who murdered her own child β that he manifested permanently at this spot as the Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga.
The name "Grishneshwar" means "Lord of Compassion" β and the temple's founding story is fundamentally about the power of forgiveness over revenge. The temple stands near the incredible Ellora Caves, making this region one of the densest concentrations of sacred art and architecture in the world.
