Takht Sri Hazur Sahib
The final resting place of Guru Gobind Singh β where he declared the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru.
The Katha
In September 1708, Guru Gobind Singh was camped at Nanded on the banks of the Godavari river. He had endured unimaginable losses β all four of his sons had been killed; two in battle at Chamkaur, and two bricked alive in a wall at Sirhind by Mughal governor Wazir Khan. Despite these devastating personal tragedies, the Guru continued his mission.
At Nanded, two assassins sent by the Mughal governor of Sirhind attacked the Guru, stabbing him while he slept. Though the Guru killed both assassins with his sword, the wound was deep. A European surgeon stitched the wound, but when the Guru drew a powerful bow days later, the wound reopened fatally.
Knowing his end was near, Guru Gobind Singh made a declaration that would reshape Sikhism for all time. He announced that after him, there would be no more human Gurus. Instead, the Guru Granth Sahib β the holy scripture β would be the eternal, living Guru of the Sikhs forever. He bowed before the Granth Sahib, placed a coconut and five coins before it, and circled it in reverence.
On October 7, 1708, Guru Gobind Singh's light merged with the divine β an event called "Jyoti Jot." The Angitha Sahib (the cremation site) inside the Gurudwara marks the exact spot. The inner sanctum, built by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, is one of the most ornate in all of Sikhism, with gold-plated walls and ceilings reflecting the glory of the last human Guru.
