Takht Sri Patna Sahib
The birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh β the warrior-saint who founded the Khalsa.
The Katha
On December 22, 1666, in a house in the ancient city of Patna, a child was born who would change the course of Indian history. He was Gobind Rai, the son of the ninth Guru, Tegh Bahadur. Even as a child, he displayed extraordinary courage and intelligence.
Young Gobind spent his formative years in Patna, playing in these very lanes, learning martial arts, and showing a precocious spiritual wisdom. When Mughal nobles came to his father's door with complaints about neighborhood children's pranks, the five-year-old Gobind Rai would settle disputes with a wisdom that left grown men speechless.
After his father's martyrdom in Delhi, the young Gobind Rai became the tenth and final Sikh Guru at the age of nine. He grew into Guru Gobind Singh β warrior, poet, philosopher, and the founder of the Khalsa. On the festival of Vaisakhi in 1699 at Anandpur Sahib, he created the Khalsa brotherhood, transforming Sikhs from a peaceful religious community into a martial force that would defend the oppressed against tyranny.
The Gurudwara preserves many relics of the tenth Guru, including his baby cradle, his weapons, and manuscripts in his own handwriting. It is one of the five Takhts (supreme seats of Sikh authority) and draws millions of devotees from around the world.
