Murudeshwar Temple
Home to the world's second-tallest Shiva statue, dramatically overlooking the Arabian Sea.
The Katha
The ten-headed demon king Ravana was the most powerful being in all three worlds. But he wanted more β he wanted immortality. He performed severe penance on Mount Kailash for Lord Shiva, even cutting off his own heads one by one as offerings. Moved by such extreme devotion, Shiva granted him the Atma-Linga β a divine lingam that would make whoever possessed it absolutely invincible and immortal.
The gods panicked. An immortal Ravana would mean eternal tyranny over the universe. They pleaded with Lord Vishnu to intervene. Vishnu devised a clever plan. He asked the young god Ganesha to trick Ravana.
As Ravana carried the Atma-Linga southward to Lanka, Vishnu covered the sun with his Sudarshana Chakra, creating the illusion of sunset. Ravana, bound by the condition that the lingam should never touch the ground before reaching Lanka, desperately needed to perform his evening prayers. Ganesha, disguised as a young Brahmin boy, offered to hold the lingam. The moment Ravana stepped away, Ganesha placed the lingam on the ground at Gokarna, where it fused permanently into the earth.
Ravana was furious. He tried with all his ten-headed might to pull the lingam out of the ground. He succeeded only in tearing off pieces β pieces that flew and landed at different spots along the coast. The covering (kashi) of the lingam landed at Murudeshwar. In his rage, Ravana smashed the kashi against the ground, and the pieces scattered across the area. The massive 123-foot Shiva statue now marks this legendary spot, gazing serenely over the ocean where this cosmic drama unfolded.
