ISKCON Temple Bangalore
One of the largest ISKCON temples in the world, spreading Krishna consciousness across the tech capital.
The Katha
In 1966, a 69-year-old man sailed from Calcutta to New York with nothing but $7 in change and a trunk full of Bhagavad Gita translations. His name was A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, and he was on a mission to spread the message of Lord Krishna to the Western world. From a small storefront on Manhattan's Lower East Side, he started a movement that would grow to span 800 temples across 100 countries β the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
ISKCON Temple Bangalore, inaugurated in 1997, is one of the grandest expressions of this global movement. Set on a 7-acre hillock called Hare Krishna Hill, the temple was built to commemorate the centennial of Srila Prabhupada's birth. It brilliantly fuses modern architecture with traditional temple design β using glass, stainless steel, and granite alongside carved gopurams and traditional shikhara forms.
The temple runs the Akshaya Patra Foundation, the world's largest school meal program, feeding over 1.8 million children across India every single school day. This massive charitable operation was inspired by Prabhupada's vision that "no child within a 10-mile radius of an ISKCON temple should go hungry." The Bangalore temple alone feeds over 150,000 meals daily.
The Janmashtami celebrations here are legendary β the temple stays open for 48 continuous hours, and over 200,000 devotees pass through, singing, dancing, and feasting on Krishna's birthday.
