Sabarimala Temple
Nestled in the dense Periyar Tiger Reserve, it draws over 50 million pilgrims annually.
The Katha
Lord Ayyappan was born from the union of Shiva and Mohini (Vishnu's female avatar), making him the child of the two greatest gods. Abandoned as a baby, he was adopted by the childless King Rajashekhara of Pandalam. The queen, jealous when she later bore her own son, plotted to kill Ayyappan. She feigned illness and said only tiger's milk could cure her, hoping the boy would be killed in the jungle.
Young Ayyappan ventured deep into the forest alone. There he encountered the demoness Mahishi, who had received a boon that only the son of Shiva and Vishnu could kill her β a seemingly impossible combination. Ayyappan battled and destroyed her. The defeated Mahishi transformed into a beautiful woman who begged Ayyappan to marry her. But the young god, committed to eternal celibacy and his mission, refused.
Ayyappan returned riding a tigress, with tiger cubs trailing behind him. The queen's plot was exposed, and the king, overwhelmed with remorse, asked his divine son for forgiveness. Ayyappan forgave everyone and retreated to the Sabarimala hills to meditate forever.
Before entering the temple, every pilgrim must observe 41 days of strict penance β no meat, no alcohol, no luxuries, sleeping on the floor, wearing only black. The 18 sacred steps leading to the sanctum represent the 18 hills surrounding the temple, and only those who have completed the 41-day vow may ascend them. The Makaravilakku β a mysterious light that appears on the distant Ponnambalamedu hill during the Makar Sankranti festival β is believed by devotees to be a divine manifestation.
