Lingaraj Temple
The largest and most ancient temple in Bhubaneswar β the city that once had over 7,000 temples.
The Katha
Bhubaneswar was once called Ekamra Kshetra β the Field of the Lone Mango Tree. Beneath this sacred mango tree, a self-manifested Shiva Lingam emerged from the earth, radiating such intense spiritual energy that sages from across the subcontinent gathered here to meditate.
The lingam was unique β it was worshipped as Harihara, a unified form of both Vishnu (Hari) and Shiva (Hara). This revolutionary concept symbolized the ultimate spiritual truth: that the two great gods, whose followers had divided temples and kingdoms in their name, were in fact one and the same divine force. While Shaivites and Vaishnavites argued across India, the devotees of Lingaraj peacefully worshipped both in a single form.
The temple was built over a thousand years ago and stands 180 feet tall β dominating the skyline of what was once the "City of Temples" with over 7,000 shrines. Over the centuries, wars, invasions, and neglect reduced that number to around 500, but Lingaraj remained the crown jewel. The temple complex covers a vast area with over 150 smaller shrines surrounding the main tower.
The sacred Bindu Sagar lake next to the temple is believed to contain drops of water from every holy river and lake in India. Bathing in it before worshipping at Lingaraj is said to be equivalent to bathing in all the sacred waters of the subcontinent. Non-Hindus are not allowed inside the temple but can view it from a special platform built for Lord Curzon in 1903.
