Kalighat Temple
The Shakti Peetha that gave Kolkata its very name β the city grew around this ancient temple.
The Katha
When the 51 pieces of Goddess Sati's body fell across the subcontinent, the toes of her right foot landed on the banks of a now-vanished channel of the Ganga. A small shrine grew around this sacred spot, deep in the forests of Bengal. Over centuries, as devotees gathered, a village formed, then a town β and eventually the great city of Calcutta (Kolkata) itself. The very name "Kolkata" is derived from "Kalikhetram" β the field of Kali.
The idol of Kali here is unlike any other. She has three enormous eyes, four arms, and a long, protruding golden tongue. The tongue is the most striking feature β it represents the moment when Kali, consumed by her destructive fury after slaying demons, danced so violently that the earth began to crack. Lord Shiva lay down beneath her feet to stop her. When she realized she was standing on her own husband, she bit her tongue in shame β and that frozen moment of shock and shame is what the idol captures for eternity.
Mother Teresa began her life's work near this temple. She would bring the dying and destitute from the streets of Kolkata to a home she established right next to Kalighat, believing that the proximity to the goddess would bring comfort to those in their final moments. The Kalighat Painting style β a unique school of Bengali art featuring bold, simplified figures β originated from artists who worked near this temple, creating portraits of the goddess for pilgrims.
