Birla Mandir
A gleaming white marble temple atop Naubat Pahad, offering panoramic views of Hyderabad.
The Katha
The Birla family β one of India's wealthiest industrial dynasties β has built temples across India as acts of devotion and public service. The Hyderabad Birla Mandir, perched atop the 280-foot Naubat Pahad (Kala Pahad), is perhaps the most visually dramatic of them all. Constructed using 2,000 tons of pure white Rajasthani marble, the temple took 10 years to build and was inaugurated in 1976.
What makes this temple unique is its deliberate silence β unlike most Hindu temples, there are no bells. The Birla family envisioned a space for pure, undisturbed meditation. The temple seamlessly blends architectural styles from three different Indian traditions β the Dravidian gopuram of the South, the delicate marble lattice work of Rajasthan, and the ornate carvings of the Odia tradition β into one harmonious whole.
From the hilltop, on a clear day, you can see the Charminar, Hussain Sagar lake, and the entire old city of Hyderabad spread out below. The approach path is adorned with sculptural panels depicting scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and the life of Buddha β emphasizing the universal message that divinity transcends sectarian boundaries.
