Batu Caves Temple
A 400-million-year-old limestone hill with 272 rainbow stairs and a 140-foot golden statue of Murugan.
The Katha
The limestone formations of Batu Caves are approximately 400 million years old β far older than any human civilization, older even than the dinosaurs. When Tamil traders and workers arrived in Malaya in the 19th century, they saw in these dramatic caves the perfect home for Lord Murugan β the warrior god who battles demons deep within mountains.
In 1890, K. Thamboosamy Pillai, a prominent Tamil community leader, dedicated the main Cathedral Cave to Lord Murugan. A wooden staircase was built to access the cave entrance 100 meters above ground. Over the decades, the stairs were replaced β first with concrete, and in 2018, with the stunning rainbow-colored steps that have made Batu Caves one of the most photographed places in Asia.
The 140-foot tall golden statue of Lord Murugan at the base of the steps is the tallest Murugan statue in the world. It took 3 years to build, using 1,550 cubic meters of concrete, 250 tons of steel, and painted with 300 liters of gold paint.
But the most extraordinary spectacle happens during Thaipusam β a festival of penance and devotion that draws over 1.5 million worshippers. Devotees enter states of deep trance and pierce their bodies with hooks, skewers, and elaborate metal frameworks called "kavadis" weighing up to 30 kg. They climb all 272 steps in this state, feeling no pain, as an act of supreme devotion and gratitude to Murugan.
